QRP operation is considered using power levels of 5 watts or less CW and 10 watts or less SSB.

Recent civil unrest

this post is in no way a political statement

The rapid increase in civil unrest, society's apathy towards criminal behavior, and authorities not being able to control situations,  brought "go boxes" to my attention, front and center.

First, have a communications plan for your family.  NEVER leave home without some form of transceiver. Always have an alternate source of power if it's an HT or portable unit. Try to include an additional antenna which provides more gain than the included rubber resistor.

Second, pick frequencies now to connect with your family. Repeaters may be overwhelmed or compromised. Choose several in succession to use, lower profile ones are good, ones with battery or generator back up even better.

Choose several simplex options. Here you can be very creative if need be. There are many
                Frequencies to choose.

Third, include HF capability. Chances are an Event would be contained in a specific geographical area. Having NVIS capability would allow you to communicate OUTSIDE the affected area. QRP power levels, with good gain antennas 6 meters and above, can serve you long term, without quickly depleting your power source. QRP equipment takes up less room, and is lighter to transport.
